 What is an Adjective?

An Adjective is a word that describes a noun or a person is called an Adjective. And it makes writing more descriptive!

Uses of Adjectives;

John is a handsome boy. (before noun)      / He is handsome. (after linking word)

Jenney is a beautiful girl.                            / She is Beautiful.

I have a blue car. /  / I have green apples,  He seems sad today. 

Two Types of Adjectives

  • Possessive Adjective
  • Quantitative Adjective

 


ü Possessive adjective

A Possessive adjective shows possession or ownership. They describe to whom a thing belongs. They are as following;

(My, His, Her, Their, Your, Our) 

Ex. - This is his blue pen.

            Did you borrow her Camera? 

            Where is my laptop Mom?                          

            Their bags were lost last week.

            What is your name?

Our teachers are very kind to us.   

Exercise 01.

Complete the following sentences using possessive adjectives.  

My, His, Her, Their, Your, Our

 

        i.            I have two sisters. ………..hair is black.

      ii.            Ben has a clever son. …………name is David.

    iii.            The reverend has a book in ………..hand.

    iv.             John is ………..best friend.

      v.            ………..parents are very kind.

Exercise 02. Make simple sentences by using possessive adjectives. 

ü  Quantitative Adjective

Quantitative adjectives describe the quantity of something. It indicates the amount or estimated amount of the noun or pronoun in a sentence. A quantitative adjective can be divided into two parts. They are definite numeral and indefinite adjectives;

1.     Definite numeral Adjectives:-

It represents exact numbers and it can be divided into two parts. They are: Cardinals and Ordinals.

Cardinals. 1 2 3 4                                           

Ex. I have two red t-shirts.

  • Jenney bought one black and three blue pens.
  • Ordinals. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
  • John has 1st class in his Bachelor's degree.  
  •  Pinky is going to buy 3rd smart phone.  
  •  He came last at the classroom.

Exercise 01

Use the most suitable words given below in the sentences.

First, third, last, one, four, fourth, fifth, six, two, second

 

a.     I have ………clever sons.

b.     Nimal has won ………..place in this series.

c.      John has ……….cat and ………dogs.

d.     Kamal has bought…………t-shirts.                                       

e.      Ben came………..in the classroom today.

f.       The ………….World War still haunts some people.

g.     The forest has only …………..white tigers left.

h.     …………..students were suspected by the principal.

i.       The ………….girl failed in the final examination. 

Exercise 02.

Make few sentences on Cardinals and Ordinals adjectives.

 

1.      Indefinite Numeral Adjectives:-

It does not denote exact numbers. So, many, very, enough, more, much, several, etc. are some of the words which describe Adjectives of quantity.

Ex. 

  • Ben gave me some money today.          
  • John needs more time to finish the homework.                  
  • I have enough food for this week.
  •  I love my parents so much. 

Exercise 01.

 Pick up five words and make simple sentences.  

So, many, very, enough, much, several, few, several

 

Exercise 02.

Find more indefinite numeral adjectives and write simple sentences.
